  • At the 2/18 City Council meeting, the Council held firm on their decision to kill CACs despite hearing from many residents who disagreed with their decision.  
Council also referred to the Planning Commission a text change on a proposal to hold a second neighborhood meeting for rezoning requests now that CACs have been disbanded. They set a public hearing for March 3rd.  
They also discussed options for holding City Council meetings in locations other than City Hall, but as one pundit described it:  Council on remote meetings –  “Let’s take an incremental approach that leaves the current procedures in place until we understand the ultimate costs and benefits of a new approach.”
Council on citizen engagement – “Let’s eliminate all of the CACs’ good work without knowing the ultimate costs and benefits of an unknown alternative.”
Nicole Stewart put forth a nomination to replace Bob Geary who is up for reappointment to the Planning Commission.  Bob has a perfect attendance record, does his homework, and makes thoughtful contributions to the discussions. The vote will be confirmed at the 3/3 meeting and another voice helping to balance the outsized influence of developers will be silenced. Expect more to come as others terms come up for renewal.
  • At the 2/18 meeting of the Safe, Vibrant, and Healthy Neighborhoods Committee, the committee voted to recommend that Council allow whole house short-term rentals throughout the City by right. This exacerbates our housing crisis by taking housing stock off the market for Raleigh residents and introduces commercial activity into residential neighborhoods.

ACTION ITEMS – What to look for in upcoming meetings – check the calendar, show up, speak up!
  • A number of CAC meetings next week will be discussing the future of CACs in light of the Council’s decision to eliminate them.  Please attend and show your support. Check the calendar, but also be aware that all meetings may not be listed because I rely on City sources for my information.
  • Two meetings on BRT and two meetings on the Parks Bonds are scheduled next week.
  • Council begins budget work sessions on Monday.
  • Tuesday’s Planning Commission meeting will be discussing a number of hot topics including ADU regulations, building height, and a second neighborhood meeting for rezoning requests.
