  • As the number of positive COVID-19 cases continues to rise in Wake County, so are concerns that the virus could overwhelm our local healthcare system. To help prevent that from happening, Wake County Board of Commissioners Chairman Greg Ford has signed a proclamation that puts a stay-at-home order in effect on Friday, March 27, at 5pm:
The goal of the proclamation is for Wake County residents to stay home and away from others who are not immediate members of their family or household. By restricting contact, the county hopes to reduce the rate at which COVID-19 is infecting residents.
All Raleigh Council committee, boards and commissions, Council district meetings, and other public meetings are canceled through April 30.
Raleigh City Council is discussing logistics for April Council meetings.

City Hall – Week of March 23, 2020


It’s clear that the COVID-19 pandemic is a serious threat to our health, safety, and way of life. Please adhere to the guidelines from local, state, and national governments.  And please do what you can to help others. We will not recover quickly or easily from the human toll or the economic repercussions.  
At the March 17 Council meeting, many individuals were appalled to see the Mayor and Council majority asking staff to “fast-track” plans to spend part of the hotel and prepared foods tax revenue on a downtown soccer stadium.  
The feasibility study clearly showed that the stadium will not bring in a great deal of revenue and will cannibalize events from existing venues.  Moving forward at this time seems especially inappropriate given the fact that thousands of local businesses and hospitality workers are experiencing extreme financial distress.  
Many Raleigh residents are suggesting the money be used to provide support to the local hospitality industry and its workers instead.
And others are questioning the basic concept of a hotel and prepared meals tax and its impact on poor families who often have few options other than living in hotels and eating prepared fast-foods.

ACTION ITEMS – What to look for in upcoming meetings – check the calendar, show up, speak up!
  • Council has a budget work session on Monday afternoon which includes looking at fees for water, solid waste services, and stormwater.  On Tuesday they will hear a report on the feasibility study for the soccer and entertainment stadium.
  • ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) will be discussed at Tuesday’s Planning Commission Text Change Committee meeting.  Advocates for ADUs by right anywhere plan to show up in force. If you favor a different approach, be sure to let Planning Commission and City Council members know.
  • The leaders of Raleigh’s CACs (Citizen Advisory Councils) will be meeting on Wednesday night to discuss how to move forward without City support.
