Items to note
  • Umstead Coalition
Now that the Umstead Coalition has filed an appeal to the judge’s decision to let the RDU quarry move forward, City Council must decide in January whether to join in on the appeal.

Please write to City Council, sign up to speak at the January 7 Council meeting (you must sign up at least two weeks in advance; not sure how holiday schedules impact the lead time, so best to sign up asap), and contact other elected officials to express your concerns.

  • Raven Ridge Rezoning
At a recent Planning Commission meeting, the developer for the Raven Ridge site introduced new changes to their proposed rezoning.  Those changes keep heights at 45 and 60 feet but remove restrictions on the number of stories in a building.

The City Council approved last year the Falls North Small area plan that limits heights to 40 feet.  Calling for 60 feet is a 50% increase in the height recommended in the small area plan.

We need appropriate heights that are consistent with the area.  60 and 45 feet are not appropriate and are not consistent with the area.  The only way to get appropriate heights is to make this desire known to City Council.  We also need certainty by limiting the number of stories per structure to 3 and 4.

So, please write to City Council, attend the hearing when it happens, and spread the word.

  • Leaf Collection
The City has purchased biodegradable paper bags for leaf collection that can be picked up by Solid Waste Services. These are available for free to residents. Each resident may pick up a free pack of 5 bags from any of the following locations:

Raleigh Municipal Building – Fourth Floor
Raleigh Central Operations Facility – 2550 Operations Way, off Westinghouse Blvd
Raleigh Northeast Remote Ops Facility – 3224 Spotswood Drive
Raleigh Yard Waste Facility –  900 North New Hope Road
Raleigh Solid Waste Services Facility – 630 Beacon Lake Drive.

Items to note from 12/3 City Council meeting
  • A special meeting will be held on December 17 to discuss Affordable Housing.  Sounds like we should assume that with a new council is in place, community support (e.g., the Chamber) for an Affordable Housing Bond has apparently flipped.
  • Committee assignments were announced.  David Cox is the only returning Council member to not be assigned to chair a committee.  Rookie Jonathan Melton will be chairing one.
  • Board and Commission appointments were announced.  Council voted to reappoint a Planning Commission member who had attended 13 of 22 meetings, but did not reappoint another member who had attended 25 of 26 meetings.  Council also voted 7-1 to reappoint the RDU Airport Authority member who supported the Umstead Quarry.
  • Council voted to send Accessory Dwelling Units, Short-term rentals, and Scooters to committees for reconsideration.
